In Marin County, real political debate is nearly extinct. Conversations happen only in safe bubbles of like-minded people, while genuine engagement with opposing views has been replaced by tribalism. If you do make a valid point that doesn’t fit the script, the other side will abruptly turn and walk away.
Now comes mid-decade redistricting, a scheme destined to become a massive fundraising machine for both parties. California voters overwhelmingly passed reforms in 2008 and 2010 to strip redistricting from politicians and give it to citizens. Those reforms prohibited favoring a party or candidate. Yet Governor Newsom’s proposal openly aims to tilt the map for partisan gain. His defenders dodge the issue with slogans—“Texas!” “Trump!” “Save Democracy!”—while ignoring the fact that Texas acted only after a DOJ warning on Voting Rights Act compliance.
If this gambit succeeds, Sacramento will seize more power from citizens, gerrymandering will deepen, and 40% of Californians will see their representation shrink even further. Instead of winning voters with ideas, our leaders would rather redraw the lines to keep their grip on power. That’s not democracy—it’s tyranny dressed up as reform.
