A veteran that received a guitar to ease his PTSD
Elks Lodge 1108 has created a program to help formerly homeless and low-income veterans furnish their homes. When a homeless veteran is housed—most often through the HUD-VASH program using a Section 8 voucher—the veteran receives an apartment and, in many cases, a bed from Swords to Plowshares. Beyond that, support is limited. The Elks provide a small “Welcome Home” grant that covers basic items such as bed linens, kitchen supplies, cleaning products, and towels.
As a result, many veterans—often disabled—move into empty apartments with little more than a roof over their heads. They are housed, but they lack the basic furniture and household items needed to live comfortably and with dignity.
To meet this need, Elks Lodge 1108 began collecting donated furniture, kitchen items, and household goods. These donations help veterans rebuild normal daily lives. The effect of this support is significant, especially for veterans with PTSD, many of whom feel forgotten after serving their country. The Lodge believes the nation can and should do more for these men and women.
This program is made possible largely through grants from the Elks National Foundation. These grants pay for about 900 square feet of storage space and help cover limited transportation costs. Mr. Behr, Veterans Program Chair, owns a pickup truck and transports many items himself, but at 78 years old, he sometimes needs help. Fellow Elks regularly step in to assist him.
Because donations often exceed current needs, the Lodge is also able to help other low-income veterans and newly assigned enlisted Coast Guard members stationed at Hamilton.
The reward for this work is simple but powerful. Lodge members see gratitude firsthand, often in the form of smiles that leave a lasting impression. The program also allows members to check in on veterans who may be struggling and help keep them connected. When needed, veterans are referred to the VA for healthcare, benefits assistance, education, and job support.
Current Needs
At this time, the Elks Veterans Program needs two things:
- People who want to donate furniture and kitchen supplies that can be used to furnish an apartment; and
- More veterans who can use the help, especially those who are newly housed, previously homeless, or living on limited incomes.
Mr. Behr is happy to provide more information about the program. He can also arrange tours of the storage space and share photos of the work being done, with permission. The Lodge currently has a strong supply of furniture and household items, including complete kitchen setups. Its greatest need right now is referrals of veterans who would benefit from this assistance.
