At its February 26, 2026, regular meeting, the Marin GOP passed a resolution in support of the Iranian people. This resolution states the committee’s solidarity with the Iranian people. It condemns the human rights abuses committed by the ruling clerical regime. It also urges the United States to support the Iranian people.
Some argue that a county party central committee shouldn’t get involved in foreign affairs. But Marin County is home to nearly 1,900 people of Iranian descent. Many came to Marin after Shah Pahlavi fled the country in 1979. Marin’s Iranian population of 0.71% surpasses California’s state average of 0.55% and the national average of 0.15%. The Iranian population of Marin County is characterized by high levels of educational attainment and significant representation in professional sectors.
Many of our fellow Marin residents have family that remain in Iran. These family members are subjected to horrific abuse by the current regime. The least we can do to relieve their suffering is to offer them our full-throated support.
